The funnest music EVER
I just had the most fun I've ever had playing in a music group.
You may ask why. Was it because my fellow musicians were extraordinarily talented? Was it because they had beautiful tones coming from beautiful instruments?
Oh no, that would have been dead boring in comparison.
There were four of us....
Dorothy, a violinist who can actually play the Violin (at 7th grade level)
Lucy, who has taught herself Violin by ear (at 2nd grade level) but is surprisingly gifted at sight reading considering
Abi, a 4th grade cellist
and finally me, the wannabe 4th grade Viola player. Wannabe because at heart I'm still a violinist in my approach to reading the notes.
Elizabeth: Alright, let's start with Handel! The bouree looks fairly easy
Dorothy: Ok 1, 2, 3
Elizabeth: Wait! I have to remember where the F is on the Viola!
Lucy: Liz, what notes are in this piece?
Elizabeth: This is in F major, meaning you need a low first finger on A and E, low second finger on D, A and E.
Lucy: Low first finger...
Elizabeth: Right next to the nut, that's it.
Abi: Can someone give me a C?
Dorothy: 1, 2, 3, 4
Elizabeth: Wait! Maybe we should start with an F major scale to get us in the ZONE
[Cacophony disguised as a one octave scale in F]
Abi: That was... interesting.
Dorothy: 1, 2, 3, 4
[Something that could no way be called music]
Elizabeth: Well, now that we've tortured that piece, let's double the speed so we can actually hear what we're playing!
Lucy: Maybe could we make that double a quarter?
Dorothy: 1, 2, 3, 4
[Something that actually sounded like Handel... kind of]
Elizabeth: How did I finish a bar ahead?
Later on:
[Music playing, cello drops out]
[Elizabeth loses track of her repeated notes]
[Abi starts looking over Elizabeth's shoulder trying to find where she is]
[Dorothy and Lucy go for it!]
[Abi figures out where she is and joins Elizabeth for the last two bars]
[Dorothy and Lucy play their last bar]
[Elizabeth and Abi play their last bar a bar later]
Abi: Elizabeth! I found you! I'm so relieved!
Elizabeth: You may of found me, but I was still looking for the others....
Still later:
Elizabeth: Alright, this one is in E flat major. Lucy that means that EVERY first finger is lowered, and EVERY second finger is lowered... and the fourth fingers on D and A are lowered too.
Lucy: [Takes note]
Dorothy: Alright, lets start
Elizabeth: Wait! Now if it looks like a B on the A string... that actually makes it a C on the G string which sits where the D string is supposed to... which means that the next finger down is a.... Abi, what comes before C?
Abi: [falls of chair in hysterics]
Dorothy: B flat.
[Music plays, two violins and cello drop out, one bar later Viola follows]
Elizabeth: Why have I finished a bar behind AGAIN?
Abi: [falls of chair in hysterics... again]
